Mobile Repair for Diamond Cut vs Normal Alloys

The concept of mobile repair for alloys in general is a relatively new one, but, alongside our partner garage, we’re rolling out a brand new service for mobile diamond cut alloy wheels. You can now get your diamond cut wheels refurbished wherever you are, something which wasn’t typically possible until now.

You might be asking: is mobile repair for diamond cut wheels less efficient and effective than it is for normal alloy wheels? In this blog post, we aim to answer all your questions surrounding this.

The difference between diamond cut alloys and regular alloys

Diamond cut alloys are widely regarded as the premium when it comes to car wheels. Luxury brands such as BMW, Audi, and Mercedes often come with diamond cut alloys, and this is thanks to the pristine look they give, especially when compared to regular alloy wheels.

Here are some of the key differences between diamond cut and regular alloy wheels:

  • Durability - Diamond cut alloys can be more prone to surface level scratches and damage than regular alloy wheels due to the exposed surface. Because of this, you might find you need mobile diamond repairs slightly more regularly than normal alloy wheel repairs.
  • Appearance - Diamond cut alloy wheels are so unique because they give a CD or DVD-like effect which can’t be achieved in any other way. This two-tone look leads to a shiny and reflective surface which many think looks better than any other type of alloy wheel.
  • Manufacturing process - The diamond cut manufacturing process involves a thin layer of metal being shaved off the surface of your alloy using a diamond-tipped cutting lathe. On the other hand, regular alloys are either powder coated or painted.
  • Maintenance - The prestige finish of diamond cut wheels comes with some additional maintenance needs. For example, when cleaning alloy wheels, it's a good idea to use milder cleaning solutions so as to avoid damaging the layer of lacquer applied and protecting the more delicate finish.

Is repairing diamond alloys harder than regular alloys?

Repairing diamond alloys is more difficult, and certainly more specialised than repairing regular alloy wheels. Whilst both forms of alloy refurbishment require expert workmanship, diamond cut wheels require a diamond-tipped lathe to refresh their unique finish. This is an expensive piece of equipment which needs to be operated by a specialist to achieve the best results. On the other hand, repairing regular alloys using standard paint or refinishing techniques is slightly more straightforward.

The other side to this is that diamond cut alloys can only be repaired a finite number of times. Each time they are refurbished, a small layer of the wheel’s surface is shaved off, meaning that they effectively get slightly thinner. Beyond a certain point, it becomes unsafe to continue to repeat this process, as it could actually start to lessen the strength of your wheels.

To counter this, we always apply a lacquer coat to diamond alloys after cutting, which helps protect against future damage, meaning that you won’t need to seek repairs as often.
